The phrase "rise of China" is used so often that it has become a cliché; nevertheless, China has been and will continue be a problem well into the future. The People's Republic of China is a hegemonic power in Asia and the rest of the world, and its newfound wealth propels the ambitions of China's leaders. Managing the relationship will occupy a considerable amount of American diplomatic and security resources.
Equally problematic is the fact that China's neighbors in Southeast Asia recognize the threat posed by China, but they do not want to see their region become a cockpit of a superpower struggle, and neither do they want to choose between neighboring China and the United States. The United States must craft a strategy of regional resilience for Southeast Asia that encourages economic growth, military reform, and democratic transformation that will enable the countries of Southeast Asia to resist Chinese pressures.
The purpose of The China Challenge is to take a new look at America's foreign policy in Asia and to provide policymakers with an insight—and solutions—to the myriad and densely interwoven issues that will confront the United States in the twenty-first century.
"Dana Dillon doesn't pull his punches in this exploration of America's stake in a rising Asia. Not everyone will embrace Dillon's conclusions, but his frank analysis should not be ignored."
"Dana Dillon's tour of Asia and the Pacific in the context of China's growing power and advancing ambition is a tour de force, a timely reminder of the tough road ahead for the United States. We may not want conflict in Asia, but Dillon shows that conflict in Asia wants us, and our best chance of averting it is to start now."
"Dana R. Dillion's The China Challenge is an intense polemic on the impending threat of China to U.S. interests in the Pacific region. It also provides readers with a candid assessment of some of the more unsettling political, military, and economic developments taking root in Southeast Asia....Dillion's book is informative, accessible, and will be of value to (American) policymakers devoted to a course of constructive engagement in Asia. Dillion should also be commended for his attempt to stimulate debate on the extent to which Dhina poses a threat to regional peace and security and where the U.S. can use its political influence to resolve issues such as nuclear disarmament, maritime piracy, and the "war on terrorism."....TheChina Challenge is an interesting book that is certain to provoke lively debate in both academic and policy-making circles. it is a welcome addition to the growing body of literature on China and Asia and should be read by anyone interested in this particular field of study.ates, and inspires. Let's collaborate!"
